Moss Family | Family & Newborn Portraits | Farmington, NM

July 11th: “Today was Emilia’s due date. It’s strange to think that she has already been with us for 11 weeks. It’s been bittersweet today. I wish she could’ve been born today, a healthy full-term newborn and  that she wouldn’t have had to endure the hard things she has gone through. I’ve been in awe at the strength this sweet little girl has shown these last 11 weeks and I’ll be able to tell her as she grows that she was born to be strong and resilient. She came into this world a miracle and will continue to do amazing things.” -Emilia’s mother

Chrisy & Her Boys | Motherhood Portrait | Farmington, NM Photographer

“We mamas are HARD on ourselves. It is SO easy to compare our lives to what we see on social media (our every day life to someone’s highlight reel). If you are a mama or mama to be, please do not wait to have a session capturing your lives, because you do not see yourself as perfect. You are beautiful exactly how you are, embrace this time in your life, no matter how messy it may feel. You will be so thankful you did! Invest in these memories and a photographer you love and you will look back with a grateful heart!”  Bethany, Mother

Should I Quit? | Farmington, NM Photographer

I Want To Quit!

I just loved to shoot beautiful images.

Then things got real after I opened my business. I didn’t realize how HARD it would be to run a business. I thought clients would come running to me! That wasn’t the case.

Because I have struggled with the business side, I have thought about quitting so many times, like thousands of times.

I received this email that has inspired me to keep persevering because I still believe in my dreams. I’ll keep hustling and putting in the work.

Should It Be This Much Work?

Seven years ago, I dropped out of law school.

We were just 22. Newlyweds.

It was the middle of the recession, and I’d just lost $10,000 on credits I’d never complete. Toward a degree I’d never earn. For a career I thought was everything.

I burned almost our entire savings. My heart was as bitter as the taste in my mouth. I was broken. So sorry. But mostly scared.

To get back on my feet, I started volunteering at Amy’s elementary school. A few days later, her principal hired me.

That first year, I did anything and everything. I organized morning drop-off and afternoon pick-up. I covered recess. I subbed when teachers were sick. I wheeled a laptop cart around campus and taught computers.

In a twist of fate, Amy met her mentor photographer there. He was a dad at the school, and she asked if she could assist him. She’d been following wedding photographers’ blogs since we got married — and even though she never really thought “their” life was possible for us, she dreamed anyways. She offered to work for free anyways. She carried his bags, got him water and learned as much as she could anyways. The fire was lit.

I started coaching soccer at our church so we could save for our first camera.

In the beginning, we took pictures nobody saw and wrote blogs that nobody read.

“The market is too saturated,” they said. “Nobody reads blogs anymore,” they said.

We dreamed anyways. Some days, we felt progress. Other nights, we cried ourselves to sleep. But we kept getting up in the morning. Kept shooting. Kept writing to the invisible audience we hoped one day would come.

If you would’ve told me 7 years ago things like an NFL football player would fly us to Paris to photograph his proposal because his sweet girlfriend follows our blog, I wouldn’t have believed it.

But just because my future wasn’t visible to me doesn’t mean it wasn’t clear to God.

So, if you are today where we were 7 years ago: shoot like everyone is watching, write like everyone is reading, love the clients you have like the clients you want, and serve that invisible audience with everything you have.

Because God sees you, what you don’t see, and in His perfect timing, He’ll make what you can’t see visible. -Jordan Demos

Why You Need Professional Pictures of Your Children | Farmington, NM Photographer

To say that I am passionate about professional photography is an understatement. I am obsessed!

This passion started when I was a child. My mom would drag my dad and my eight siblings all throughout my childhood to Durango for professional family portraits at Andy’s. You can tell what was and is important to my mom: her family.

Then my passion grew when I gave birth to my firstborn.

I wanted to capture those sweet, fleeting moments of having a newborn.

All of those pictures are so precious to me, especially as each year passes!

Below, I give you three reasons why professional photography of your children and family are so important.

3 Reasons Why You Need Professional Pictures

  1. You forget. You forget how fast they grow up when you are in the thick of parenting, covered in their body fluids (e.g. exploding diapers and spit-up), and are surrounded by them 24/7. You think that you will always remember their baby smiles and tiny toes and fingers. But you forget. So professional pictures are a way to capture them so you can remember.
  2. So your children can see how beautiful they are. My children play hard – which usually means that they are covered in dirt, sweat, and their hair is a crazy mess. I find that my kids, especially my girls, need visual reminders of how beautiful they are. This also gives them greater self-confidence. It’s not that outer beauty is where their worth is at (not at all), but sometimes children need an outward reminder of their great inner and outward beauty.
  3. So you can see how beautiful they are. This is important. I have a picture of my children on my dresser. When I wake up, I see a strong visual reminder of what is more valuable and important to me than anything in this world. The portrait is also a reminder of why I do what I do; I’m a stay-at-home mom. Plus, it’s proof that all five kids can look presentable at the same time – a miracle!

Conclusion

You’ll never regret spending the money on having beautiful, professional pictures taken of your children. I will repeat what I always write at the end of each blog post. Those pictures will capture your heart, your most precious moments, and your legacy. That is priceless.

Christi & Children | Motherhood Portrait | Farmington, NM Photographer

Over the years I’ve seen other women, the media, the feminist movement subtly diminish the work of motherhood as it’s less important or not as impactful as forging a career or chasing a dream. I want to take a moment to affirm mothers. The art of raising successful, responsible, Godly humans of truth is literally the creation of the next generation. The intentionality and character required to maintain an ordered home, to prepare meals, to invent activities and to discipline wisely – for years at a time requires a woman of maturity. ‘Mothers, there is nothing less about what you do. You are the heart of the world. Don’t stop beating. (Dale Partridge)’

I read this this morning and wanted to sing praises. Be the heart of the world and beat so strong ladies. -Jessica Haderlie

My Exact Lighting Equipment | Farmington, NM Photographer

You would like to explore studio lighting but it confuses you like mad because of the myriad of options and brands. Where do you start? What is the best brand? Do I need one light, two, or three? Do I need a reflector?

Well I’ve got you covered friend!

I was so incredibly frustrated too. I tried to learn studio lighting by myself by watching hours and hours of YouTube videos – YouTube has all the answers right? I decided that YouTube left me more confused because everyone has a different way of doing things.

Professional Help

So I decided that I needed help from a professional children’s photographer. I paid for a workshop from an incredible photographer who shoots for Zulily.com.

That was the best decision I had made.

Conclusion

Today, I will share with you the exact equipment that I use and what I was trained on.

I hope this takes all the confusion out of studio lighting for you!

This is my exact one light set-up . I don’t use a reflector though.
This is my light, the AlienBees b400.
13-foot Air-Cushioned Heavy Duty Light Stand
Soft Silver PLM™ Umbrellas, 64 inch The black cord that you see connects the b400 to your camera. It is included so there is no extra purchase.
PLM White Front Diffusion Fabric, the white fabric cover that slips over the PLM
Hot shoe adapter. I didn’t want to spend $300 on wireless receivers like the PocketWizard. So I bought the hot shoe adapter. It’s about $15. It syncs your camera to the b400 through the sync cord that you see hanging out from the b400 above.

Jayme, Emil, Teddy, and MOPS | Farmington, NM Photographer

I would like to highlight a wonderful mom who was in my little studio space last month and who is a friend.

That woman is Jayme. She is an incredible mom with a heart for Jesus!

Jayme is a wife and mother to three very handsome boys. The oldest boy is about to turn three. That tells you how busy she has been.

Even so, she leads a very important ministry in Farmington. It’s a ministry that supports, blesses, and provides friendship for moms. That ministry is MOPS (Mothers of Preschoolers).

Jayme’s Story

Jayme never thought that she would lead a women’s group. The idea was laughable! She grew up with a brother, played on the boy sports teams, and worked in male-dominated environments. Guys were less complicated and less drama. Then she joined MOPS when she was pregnant with her firstborn.

MOPS

Now Jayme will tell you that she doesn’t know where she would be without MOPS. She said that she has come to understand that women need women. Can I get an amen? That is worth repeating: Women need women! Yes we are fickle and emotional, but we need each other. We need friendship and a safe place to share our struggles (Jayme’s words).

Conclusion

Jayme urges all women to find a group that they can feel confident in – whether it be MOPS, the baby wearing group, a book club, or any kind of other group. We need each other! If you would like more information about MOPS, please call Jayme. MOPS is open to all women and is non-denominational. Jayme 402-686-0505

Twins 1st Year Portrait | Farmington, NM Photographer

They are her last babies! So she really wanted to take professional portraits of their first year birthday.

The mom in the portraits is my beautiful sister! I told her that I wanted her in the pictures!!! Of course, she hesitated. Most mothers do not want to be in front of the camera!

But the end result was something beautiful, timeless, and captures her devotion and unconditional love for her babies.

So please moms, be in the pictures with your sweet babies! These are the moments that you will want to hold and remember for a lifetime.
