Moss Family | Family & Newborn Portraits | Farmington, NM

July 11th: “Today was Emilia’s due date. It’s strange to think that she has already been with us for 11 weeks. It’s been bittersweet today. I wish she could’ve been born today, a healthy full-term newborn and  that she wouldn’t have had to endure the hard things she has gone through. I’ve been in awe at the strength this sweet little girl has shown these last 11 weeks and I’ll be able to tell her as she grows that she was born to be strong and resilient. She came into this world a miracle and will continue to do amazing things.” -Emilia’s mother

“We mamas are HARD on ourselves. It is SO easy to compare our lives to what we see on social media (our every day life to someone’s highlight reel). If you are a mama or mama to be, please do not wait to have a session capturing your lives, because you do not see yourself as perfect. You are beautiful exactly how you are, embrace this time in your life, no matter how messy it may feel. You will be so thankful you did! Invest in these memories and a photographer you love and you will look back with a grateful heart!”  Bethany, Mother

Should I Quit? | Farmington, NM Photographer

I Want To Quit!

I just loved to shoot beautiful images.

Then things got real after I opened my business. I didn’t realize how HARD it would be to run a business. I thought clients would come running to me! That wasn’t the case.

Because I have struggled with the business side, I have thought about quitting so many times, like thousands of times.

I received this email that has inspired me to keep persevering because I still believe in my dreams. I’ll keep hustling and putting in the work.

Should It Be This Much Work?

Seven years ago, I dropped out of law school.

We were just 22. Newlyweds.

It was the middle of the recession, and I’d just lost $10,000 on credits I’d never complete. Toward a degree I’d never earn. For a career I thought was everything.

I burned almost our entire savings. My heart was as bitter as the taste in my mouth. I was broken. So sorry. But mostly scared.

To get back on my feet, I started volunteering at Amy’s elementary school. A few days later, her principal hired me.

That first year, I did anything and everything. I organized morning drop-off and afternoon pick-up. I covered recess. I subbed when teachers were sick. I wheeled a laptop cart around campus and taught computers.

In a twist of fate, Amy met her mentor photographer there. He was a dad at the school, and she asked if she could assist him. She’d been following wedding photographers’ blogs since we got married — and even though she never really thought “their” life was possible for us, she dreamed anyways. She offered to work for free anyways. She carried his bags, got him water and learned as much as she could anyways. The fire was lit.

I started coaching soccer at our church so we could save for our first camera.

In the beginning, we took pictures nobody saw and wrote blogs that nobody read.

“The market is too saturated,” they said. “Nobody reads blogs anymore,” they said.

We dreamed anyways. Some days, we felt progress. Other nights, we cried ourselves to sleep. But we kept getting up in the morning. Kept shooting. Kept writing to the invisible audience we hoped one day would come.

If you would’ve told me 7 years ago things like an NFL football player would fly us to Paris to photograph his proposal because his sweet girlfriend follows our blog, I wouldn’t have believed it.

But just because my future wasn’t visible to me doesn’t mean it wasn’t clear to God.

So, if you are today where we were 7 years ago: shoot like everyone is watching, write like everyone is reading, love the clients you have like the clients you want, and serve that invisible audience with everything you have.

Because God sees you, what you don’t see, and in His perfect timing, He’ll make what you can’t see visible. -Jordan Demos

How I Achieved My Goals Last Year | Farmington, NM Photographer

This is a portrait that I took with my new studio set-up at my new location.

I love, love, love the New Year and all the hope and potential it encompasses!

I, like the masses, have made resolutions year after year with all the good intentions and hope of fulfilling them. But life took over and the resolutions were too quickly forgotten

Finally Achieving My Goals!

That was until last year. Last October, I attended a photography training. I talked to Annie, my mentor/trainer about my photography goals. She told me about how she used a vision board to achieve some pretty big goals.

Vision Boards

The day I came home from my training was the day that I put my vision board together. YOU GUYS! I want to tell you that vision boards work!!!

I put down on my vision board that I wanted to have a studio set-up and earn $1,500 to buy it. I also wanted to find a professional place to shoot because my home is never a showcase but a place of living. I had absolutely no idea of how I was going to achieve those goals. They seemed IMPOSSIBLE! But with prayer and work, I achieved them by December.

Below is the video that my mentor put together on vision boards.

I hope you knock your goals out of the park this year! You are meant to accomplish big and significant things – whether that be to start your own business or read to your children more. Please don’t forget prayer. He will help you and He is rooting for you!

New Year, Big Changes! | Zia Photographer | Farmington, NM Child Photographer

Hello friends!

I’ve made some pretty scary/exciting/big changes to my little business! I think that some of you will like them and I hope to give others inspiration to follow their own hearts and to walk their own paths.

Here are the two big changes.

Only Shoot with White and Neutrals

Photography is my canvas. White, neutrals, and simplicity make my heart sing. I want to create art/portraits with those colors. I truly believe that there are others who love the same. This type of style is not for everyone. If you like rich and vibrant color, I can refer you to other talented photographers.

Shoot with Studio Lighting

Natural light is my first love. But babies and small children want to eat and be at home when sunset rolls around. I totally get that!

So now I can better serve my little clients by offering indoor studio sessions.

I did so much soul searching to see if these changes were right for me. I wondered if people would still hire me, and the people pleaser in me doesn’t like to repel anyone. But I know that I will better serve myself and the people who are attracted by my work if I continue to follow my heart and do what creatively fills me.

What things are you creating and how are you following your own path?

Infinite BBQ | Farmington, NM Food Photographer

Chopped Beef sandwich never tasted so good!

So I did a little work for Infinite BBQ. If you haven’t tried their BBQ, I would suggest running to their food trailer right now!

It is some of the best BBQ that I have ever eaten! No joke. Also, try their Frito Pie with their pulled pork or beef in it. Best twist on Frito Pie invented!

Here are some of the stock photos that I took for them.

3 Biggest Takeaways | Zia Photography | Farmington, NM Photographer

I set a goal to attend a professional workshop/training in my first year of business. Was it worth it? You bet it was! I came away with my mind blown!

Here are my three biggest takeaways from attending a one-on-one workshop.

1. Nothing beats hands-on training.

I have spent hours upon hours watching YouTube videos on how to set up studio lighting. I came away dazed and confused! There are so many different lighting set ups.

The workshop taught me how to set up and use studio lighting for newborns and children. I saw first-hand the equipment she used and I was able to shoot with it. It was so SIMPLE! See, mind blown!

2. I learned the complete business side of photography.

When it comes to business, I stink. In one day, I learned how to market myself and how to make myself profitable. Learning the business side was PRICELESS!

Before my workshop, I spent several hundred dollars on online classes. But being able to talk to a person and ask why she did things the way she did beat everything that I had bought.

3. Be orderly.

I was taught that being orderly will set you up for immediate and long term success.

I am a hot mess everyday because I am naturally unorganized.

I was so inspired to slow down and make systems for how I respond to clients and everything else.

If you are wondering if a workshop is right for you, especially since there are so many on-line workshops, I would say skip the on-line one and meet with a real person! Connection and hands-on training is always the best!

Homecoming 2016 | Farmington, NM Photographer

It started out with their parents knowing each other. Then they started to comment of each other’s Instagram and Snapchat  accounts. Their friendship grew from there.

I was privileged to photograph Jordan and Alexis’s homecoming pictures.

I hope the pictures remind them to enjoy life, to treasure friendships, and to always dance!

The Girl Behind The Camera | Farmington, NM Photographer

Pumpkin Donuts

Friday Yay-Day’s Post | The Girl Behind the Camera

The girl behind the camera – a peak into my everyday, mundane, and wonderful life.

I’m breaking out the pumpkin today!

I went on my run this morning and it was pretty chilly! I actually needed to wear a sweater. Sweater weather is the sign for me that fall is on its way.

Baking Friday

Friday is the day that my daughter and I bake. I give her a cooking lesson which is always a baking lesson because she only wants to bake cupcakes or muffins (can you blame her:).

So I decided that since I felt the first sign of fall and the internet is starting to flood the blog world with pumpkin recipes, it would be perfect to bake these pumpkin crumb donuts with her!

My baking partner.

Have a Great Weekend

I hope you enjoy this recipe! It’s a keeper and it makes the best pumpkin donuts!

Have a great weekend!

Exciting Anouncement! | Farmington, NM Motherhood Photographer

I have really exciting news! I have been wanting to start offering this since I opened by business in January!

I have a heart for mothers since I am a mother of five. I know that being a mother is the hardest job in the world! I know that when you are in the trenches, the job doesn’t seem beautiful or worthy. But I am here to tell you that wiping runny noses, preparing meals, washing the millionth load of laundry, and the myriad of other tasks are so beautiful and worthy! We are raising little human beings that a loving Heavenly Father has trusted us with. It is a glorious job!

So I am going to start offering Mommy & Me mini sessions because I want mothers to have beautiful photos of them and their children. I want them to see the beauty of motherhood, especially when it doesn’t seem beautiful. I want those photos to remind them that motherhood is totally worth all the sacrifices and hard work. Those little human beings are worth it!
